The New 2016 Australian Silver Kangaroo

This 2016, the Perth Mint (Australia’s sovereign mint) is set to release the first ever 1 oz Australian Kangaroo silver bullion coin. This may be confusing because Australia already has silver Kangaroo coins. Those coins were all individually capsulized and sold in smaller mintages because they were considered collector coins.

The new 2016 silver bullion Kangaroo coin will be sold in tubes just like the American Silver Eagle and the Canadian Silver Maple Leaf. Each silver kangaroo is struck in 1 ounce of pure .9999 fine Australian Silver and unlike its capsulized brethren, will be delivered in acrylic tubes of 25. Also, unlike Silver Eagles and Silver Maples, the 2016 Australian Silver Kangaroos will be delivered in monster boxes of 250.

A key feature of being a bullion coin is that 2016 Silver Kangaroos will be eligible for Precious Metals IRAs as each sovereign coin is backed by the Australian government.

The obverse of the 2016 Silver Kangaroo is similar to other Perth Mint silver coins and features the portrait of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II designed by the famous Ian Rank-Broadley.

The reverse of the coin features the classic red kangaroo design, engraved by Dr. Stuart Devlin. The kangaroo is encircled by an all new embellished design featuring an outward, radiating sun likeness.

A new security feature was also added on the 2016 Australian Silver Kangaroo – a micro engraved “A” that is visible only under magnification within the “A” of “Australian.”
